Doing my PhD in Germany was easy as compared to the situation when working and getting children some years later far from home. Lacking a network of "experienced" families with family support far away in Italy (my spouse`s homeland) and Spain (where I am from), not knowing about the where's and what's related to children, we were very thankful to the advice and information provided from Ulrike Fempel in her function of familiy consultant in the Human Resources department of my employer.
Ulrike Fempel has a wide experience on family related topics and her multi-cultural background made her understand our needs more precisely. Thanks to her advice we enjoyed a great country.

Germany is full of rules and this is also the case with respect to school and education. Unless you know these rules (many of them are not written down anywhere, so it seems), you might run into smaller and bigger problems. Therefore, being unfamiliar to these rules and to the culture, it is absolutely necessary to get guided by someone who is knowledgeable and trustful. We were lucky to have found Ulrike Fempel, to help us in many situations and still count on her expertise, when it comes to decisions with school. Our daughter is now in 3rd grade and we already experience, that at this point of her school life, her future might be decided. This is strange for us, but living here in Germany, we have to adapt to the ways and rules set here.

Although I have lived in Germany for some years now, school is really a challenge for me, because it is so different as compared to my home country (Iran). Also, the rules and laws about school are changing constantly, so unless you are guided by a native expert, you feel really lost. There are a lot of options for children in Germany, but you have to pick the right ones. I am glad for the knowledgeable tips of "family-in-germany" and the team.
